FA Cup Review – Manchester United Beat Arsenal

Manchester United secured a relatively easy win against Arsenal in the Football Association (FA) Cup at Old Trafford. Goals from Fabio da Silva and Wayne Rooney secured the 2-0 victory, which saw Arsenal drop out of their third major competition in as many weeks.

United who were themselves on the back of two consecutive defeats which is a poor run of form by their standards, after losing at Chelsea and then Liverpool last week, they were looking to stabilise their own ship after conceding a large points lead in the Premier League.

Both teams were looking to progress to the semi final of the competition that United last won in 2004 and Arsenal who last won the trophy in 2005 by beating United in the final, this was also the Gunners last major trophy success.

Arsenal had recently lost the Carling Cup final against Birmingham and were then knocked out of the Champions League by Barcelona, the Premier League is now their only chance of winning a trophy this season.

The Gunners may have been encouraged before the game as United made several changes to their team, but they failed to take advantage. As predicted Arsenal dominated much of the early possession but failed to create many clear cut chances, apart from Edwin Van der Sar making a good save from a Robin Van Persie effort.

United were initially limited to counter attacking, but the game plan paid off after 28 minutes after Almunia’s initial save from a Hernandez header, Fabio, who was unmarked, was able to easily slot home ทางเข้าufabet the rebounded ball, to give United a 1-0 lead. Despite the majority of the possession, Arsenal again lacked a cutting edge which has seen them fall short so many times in recent years.

The Gunners did come out fighting for the second half as veteran Van Der Sar made a fine double save from Koscielny, but on the breakaway Wayne Rooney headed home another rebounded effort from Hernandez to give the hosts a comfortable 2-0 lead on 49 minutes.

As Arsenal pushed forward in search of a goal they left themselves vulnerable in defence and they nearly conceded a third goal as Almunia saved from Hernandez. Which also saw Djourou injuring his shoulder in the scramble to clear the ball.

Van der Sar, who is rumoured to be in his last season at United. made fine saves from a Chamakh header and a long range Rosicky effort as the Gunners searched for an elusive goal.
